A recent iPhone still needs a regional check

For the four main iPhone 16 models, the physical-only market exceptions remain relevant. Do not apply the SIM rules for iPhone Air or a newer generation to an iPhone 16 bought in China mainland.

iPhone 16e is a separate model with its own record. In particular, Apple’s Hong Kong and Macao guidance distinguishes the 16e from the four main iPhone 16 models covered here.

Keep home and travel lines organized

A supported iPhone 16 can have two active eSIMs. Label the travel line and explicitly select it for mobile data. Review any automatic data switching and your home carrier’s roaming terms before relying on the second line abroad.

If you bought the US version, there is no physical nano-SIM fallback. Confirm your provider accepts the exact device and save its installation instructions before leaving reliable Wi-Fi.

Questions about iPhone 16

Do iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max support eSIM?

Yes, in supported markets. US versions have no physical SIM tray. China mainland, Hong Kong and Macao versions of these models use physical SIMs without eSIM.

How many eSIMs can iPhone 16 have?

A supported iPhone 16 can store eight or more eSIM profiles, with two eSIMs active at once. Stored profiles do not all run together, and only one line supplies cellular data at a time. Physical-only regional versions do not have this capability.

Does iPhone 16e have the same eSIM restrictions as iPhone 16?

No. Its Hong Kong and Macao rule differs from the four main iPhone 16 models. Select iPhone 16e in the checker for its own record and regional evidence.

Can an unlocked US iPhone 16 use a physical airport SIM?

No. The US version is eSIM-only. An unlock changes carrier eligibility, not the absence of a SIM tray.
