Hong Kong and Macao are the important split
Apple lists the iPhone XS among the Hong Kong and Macao models that use eSIM. The XR and XS Max versions sold in those markets instead use two physical nano-SIMs. Do not copy an XS answer onto an XS Max.
Keep a physical home SIM alongside travel data
On a supported version, this generation can use a nano-SIM and an eSIM. Choose the travel line for mobile data and keep the home line only for the services you need. Keeping a line enabled can still incur charges under your carrier’s roaming terms.
If your home line is already an eSIM, check how you will switch lines before purchasing. This generation does not have the two-active-eSIM capability Apple introduced with iPhone 13 models.
Questions about iPhone XR
Do iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max support eSIM?
Both models have eSIM-capable versions. Neither mainland-China version supports eSIM. In Hong Kong and Macao, iPhone XS supports eSIM while iPhone XS Max uses two physical nano-SIMs.
Does iPhone XR support eSIM in Hong Kong?
The Hong Kong and Macao iPhone XR versions use two physical nano-SIMs. An XR originally sold in a supported eSIM market needs a separate carrier-lock and provider check.
Can an imported iPhone XR gain eSIM support by changing its current location?
Changing the location does not change a physical-only regional version into an eSIM phone. Identify the original hardware version first.
The model records on this page retain their own regional and hardware evidence. Compatibility is documented from manufacturer sources. This does not represent hands-on activation testing.

An EID indicates eSIM hardware. It does not prove the phone is unlocked, that every provider will accept it or that a plan includes coverage at your destination. Do not send us your IMEI, EID or account details.
